Night and Day Dance has offered private dance lessons in the Vancouver area (and beyond) for 11 years!
Collectively, our instructors have been dancing, performing and teaching for over 60 years! Individually, we offer a wide range of skills and backgrounds. Common to us all is the ability to teach absolutely anyone how to dance!
Our instructors teach almost exclusively from their home studios.
You can find us around BC and even in Alberta – in Vancouver, Victoria, New West, the Sunshine Coast, and Edmonton!
Our primary teaching location in Vancouver is on E 2nd Ave between Commercial and Victoria.
David Yates – Co-Founder
David Yates is a dancer, teacher, multi-instrumentalist, and performing artist with unquenchable curiosity and a passion for the heartfelt, soulful, and deep. A performer and teacher since 1998, with experience ranging from lindy hop to Butoh, circus arts to contact improv, his teaching is deep and diverse. He performs music as Breathwood and performs with the world fusion collective Naad. Most recently, he has been exploring the relationships between movement, meditation, sound healing, and social interaction in a range of workshops that support a more holistic approach to embodiment and being.
Notable experiences include dancing with the Vancouver Opera in Madama Butterfly, being suspended from the ceiling of Rogers Arena as a drummer for an international airline convention opening ceremony, choreographing for the Hallmark film “The Irresistible Blueberry Farm,” stilt walking on the pilot of Blink and in Witches of East End, and teaching at festivals such as Dance Camp Northwest,Blessed Coast, Northwest Blues Recess, Starbelly Jam, and more.
My wife and I have enjoyed dance lessons over the years in several North American cities, but David is by far the best instructor we have encountered. He is extraordinarily efficient without hurry, his explanations are thoroughly clear, and he demonstrates each move with grace and simplicity. A half-dozen private lessons put us miles ahead of group lessons we have had in the past. We recommend Night and Day highly without qualification. It has been just a superb experience and we plan to return.
Diane Garceau – Co-Founder
Diane Garceau has been a dance instructor and performer since 1998 teaching classes and workshops both nationally and internationally. Her love of dance has brought her many memorable experiences including dancing the polka with Michael Buble, swing dancing for a music video as well as for a Bravo Fact short film, waltzing for the TV series Romeo Section and Signed, Sealed and Delivered, and blues dancing for musician Wes Mackey on Urban Rush. She first became passionate about dancing after reluctantly attending a junior high school dance and being told she was a terrible dancer. More of an icebreaker than an insult, the remark sparked a playful curiosity about movement and rhythm that has lasted to this day. Diane believes that for everyone, even the awkward two left feet or reluctant dancers, there is a way in to sparking the love and understanding of dance. Whether it be through dance’s structure and geometric patterns, its sports-like physics and mechanics, its musical phrasing or its social aspect, there is nothing more satisfying to Diane than finding and igniting that spark in her students.
My fiancée and I purchased a 4 class package through Diane Garceau for our wedding dance. Diane was very thoughtful and patient with us "beginners" as she choreographed our dance routine and instructed us on the details. We were both nervous and shy but Diane made us feel relaxed and at ease with the process - and it all came to together great! We are also very satisfied with each post-class follow up emails that carefully detailed the minutes of our session, which included the steps, new moves, transitions and what to practice before the next class. We really felt like she cared about our success.

Jay Holman – Instructor
Jay Holman is a natural born dancer, musician and teacher. A true artist, he feels the rhythm and pulse in every song and is passionate about inspiring others to do the same.
Over the past six years Jay has specialized in two styles of dance: Blues and West Coast Swing, yet he continues to cross train in Tai Chi, Pilates, Hip Hop, African, Ballet, Tango, Salsa, East Coast Swing, Lindy Hop and much more. With six years of teaching dance under his belt, and 14 years teaching music, Jay is very ambitious to build a dance community that will continue to grow for years to come. His comprehensive teaching style is one that focuses on the understanding of true partnership and connection. Memorizing footwork and patterns is not Jay’s way.
In educating students on how to ‘feel’ the music and the dance, opposed to counting out steps, they will acquire technique in an enjoyable and rewarding way. Jay continues to travel and train; always striving to bring the latest styles and trends back to Victoria, BC. Jay understands the significance of keeping things current and fresh!
