365 Days of Movement
Introduction
In 2003 I read a book called 365 Views of Mt. Fuji: Algorithms of the Floating World by Todd A. Shimoda. In that book, one of the subplots involved a painter who decided to paint one portrait of Mt. Fuji per day for an entire year. Needless to say, I was enchanted with the idea.
I decided to embark on a similar journey. What better way to truly delve into a subject than to challenge myself to spend at least a few moments of each day in contemplation of that subject, and then record my thoughts? I gave myself very few rules: I had only to write a word, a phrase, or a sentence or two related to movement. Any kind of movement was acceptable: physical, emotional, mental, mundane, etc. I began writing in February of 2004.
I almost made it. I think I peetered out about a month before the year ended. A six–week trip to Thailand proved to be a major disruption to my momentum. Perhaps one day I'll complete the work. For now, I'd like to share some of my entries as a portal to the various ways in which we may contemplate movement and its importance and meaning in our lives. Enjoy!
