Private Lessons
Private lessons are perfect for small groups, couples, or individuals who:
- want to progress beyond the limits of a group class setting
- have specific questions or problem areas
- want to set their own pace
- desire extra practice, feedback, and attention
- are preparing for a social event such as a wedding
- are celebrating a special occasion such as a birthday
The Private Lesson Approach
We gently guide our students through the process of connection, leading and following, and moving through space. Each new concept builds upon the previous one, so every move makes sense from the very beginning. There are no secret signals or details that must be accepted "just because" someone said so!
We also have a special way of helping our students uncover trouble areas, then problem-solving with them to make their dancing go more smoothly. From there, we take things a little further. We then give our students room to discover their own styles by emphasizing their ability to choose what to do from moment to moment. Sometimes this leads to new combinations that build upon what we have already taught. Even when "misteps" occur, we see such "mistakes" as an opportunity for learning, and as material for new variations and ways of moving.
In the words of one of our students:
"Their easy-going manner instantly erases all the fears of a new dancer and with their unique style of teaching you learn quickly and are left excited about what you will learn in your next lesson."
Dance Styles
In addition to our open-ended approach to partner dancing, we teach the basics of several social dance styles including lindy hop, east coast swing, blues, and salsa. We can also tailor lessons for individuals or couples who would like help with their own movement practice. Past lessons have included club dancing, goth dance, foxtrot, waltz, and tango.
Learning How to Learn: A Useful Skill
When you come to a private lesson, be ready to actively learn. Here are some ways to make better use of your time and money:
- Do research beforehand. If you have a particular style in mind, such as waltz, watch some video clips somewhere like Youtube. You'll get a better sense if that's the style you want to learn, or if you need a different option.
- Bring a notepad to keep track of what you learn, so your brain can focus on learning. We find that making lists of moves in your own words really helps with remembering!
- Bring a video/digital camera so you can record moves for later practice. We don't mind if you need to take clips of us demonstrating what we teach you.
- Ask questions, ask questions, ask questions!
- Communicate your thoughts - is the lesson too fast, too slow? Make sure it goes the way you want it to.
